Hello folks 👋
There are 2 topics I am actively thinking about a lot these days:
Topic #1: Writing Online
This is an obvious one based on my last post. There appears to be a link with people writing continuously online on a given topic, and somehow managing to make a career out of it.
I've been writing online (inconsistently) for the better part of 2 years now, and I'm hoping with a bit of effort over the next 2-3 years I will be able to create a business from it!
Topic #2: Navigating the World of Self-Employment
I first got interested in working for myself a few years ago.
When I started my first grad job as a quantity surveyor, I encountered colleagues who had set up their own business and were consulting for the same client. These colleagues were netting significantly more per month than the average salaried consultant for doing the same work!
Since then, I've travelled down that same path and I've learned the following:
Freelance consultants work harder than salaried staff as they have more risk. They do not have a secure long term contract therefore, they are incentivised to outperform their counterparts to improve future work prospects.
Sharpening the blade - if you are a consultant you have to make sure you are at the top of your game. This involves trying to become a subject matter expert. I've tried to to this by investing in courses so I can refine my skills whilst working as a quantity surveyor.
Networking is difficult. I've always struggled with the concept of networking as I felt that it was a shallow way of using another person to get something in the context of a social setting. I've realised now that networking is all about making meaningful relationships in order to add value.
That's it for now folks!
